It's my birthday in 21 minutes. Something I'm normally insanely excited about - despite the ever looming number that that starts with a T and comes after 29 being ever closer -, and have been, up to about twenty minutes ago. I love birthdays, especially my own. A whole day dedicated to people thinking and talking about me? Why is there only one of these!? There should be parades, national holidays, world love-ins, something more to celebrate the wonder that is me. You get the idea, yeah? So why am I curled up in bed sobbing? Apart from officially being closer to the T-number than 25 in 16 minutes? Because this is the first major event for me since my father died in February. I got a birthday card signed by mother and brother today, and the lack of paternal signature hit me a lot harder than I thought. I miss him so much, and there's not really anyone that I can call up and sob to at 11.46 on a Tuesday night about it, hence this post, in the hopes that the misery will work itself out, and I can go back to feeling excited. I truely hadn't thought how hard this would be. My family and closest friends are all back in Australia, and while I have some good friends here in Japan, there's none I really feel comfortable bawling my eyes out at. It's only really been three months - 5.32pm, Friday 9th February - a time forever seared into my brain. Up until right now, I've been doing well. I mean, it's not like Dad's death was much of a surprise. He had cancer, liver cancer, and it ate him whole. Dear Merlin, let my death be quick, not consumed slowly over months by my own body. Or buried alive with spiders. Something that is very high on my list of ways not to go out. Or death by goldfish. I read on the internet the other day how some guy died in a freak accident when he inhaled his pet goldfish and it became lodged in his throat. How does one accidentally inhale a goldfish? Do we even want to know? Poor Nemo. Anyway, I'm feeling a little better now, thank you. The wheel turns, and I know I'll see my father again someday, but I'm damned if that makes the loss easier to bear now. For now, I'll go back to enjoying my birthday. And hey; midnight.
